Top Detox Foods: part 1

If you ever complained of fatigue, exhaustion, moodiness, headaches, skin issues, bloating, difficulty losing weight, and muscle or joint pain, chances are, your detox systems are bogged down.

Detox may sound like a FAD or trend, but it’s not. Your body has been detoxing since the day you were born. It needs a constant supply of certain nutrients to continue to do so efficiently. That’s the power of food. It has the power to boost your detoxification (and reduce inflammation, prevent disease, etc) or make things worse.

In this video, I share the first 6 out of 12 natural foods that will help your body detox so you get rid of discomforts and start living your life energized.

Hi, this is Nour Zibdeh, functional nutritionist. Do you want to know what foods help your liver clean up all the extra chemicals and toxins so you get rid of headache, brain fog, muscle pain, fatigue, and feel energized and your best?

In these two video series, I’m going to share with you the top 12 foods or food groups that will help support your liver as it does its job of cleaning out all these toxins.

Are you ready to find those out?

What I’m now going to do is, I’m now going to share only 10 or 12 foods. I see this online all the time where there’s only a list of 10 items. This is not really helpful because there’s so many foods out there that you can choose from that are super nutritious and foods that you actually can enjoy. I’m going to give you options in each food group so that you pick your favorite and still nourish your body.

All right. The first food group is going to be the cruciferous vegetable group. That includes things like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, kale, mustard greens and others in that family. What these foods have is they provide your body with sulfur, which is an amino acid, which is going to build amino acids that are necessary for the second pathways or the second phase in liver detoxification. There’s a benefit to eating those foods raw and cooked so choose half and half.

Maybe add some broccoli or cauliflower as a snack on the go. Maybe shred some Brussels sprouts and kale and have that, and cabbage and have that as a salad. When you cook those foods, remember that the cooking technique is going to affect the nutrient content so don’t over cook those with a lot of water. Just lightly steam with some olive oil or some sauté five to seven minutes, and that will help you preserve the nutrients as much as possible.

The second food group is going to be foods that add a lot of aroma to our meals. This is garlic, onion, shallots, and leaks. These foods also have sulfur which is going to build those amino acids needed for phase two in the liver detox. Incorporate those cooked and raw as well, just like the cruciferous vegetables.

The third food group is going to be the vitamin C foods. This is things like … You might think oranges first but remember there are other foods that contain vitamin C. Vegetables bell pepper, broccoli, Brussels sprouts are great vitamin C sources. Fruit like pineapple, cantaloupe, papaya, and strawberries as well. What vitamin C does … Now, it’s an anti-oxidant. What it does for the detox is that it helps trigger the phase one enzymes in liver detoxification. It also helps your body create glutathione which is an anti-oxidant, even referred to as the master anti-oxidant.

It’s very important, especially for the second phase in the liver detox. Also what it does is very important, is as your liver goes from phase one to phase two, it is going to create free radicals or intermediate compounds that are even more toxic than what you’ve started with. Vitamin C is going to help protect your tissues from any damage while your liver does its job. Be careful with vitamin C, as once it’s exposed to heat it’s going to break down. You want to enjoy these foods raw and fresh as much as possible.

The fourth food group is your vitamin E foods. Vitamin E is also an anti-oxidant. What it does is, while vitamin C protects the environments in your body that are made of water because vitamin C is soluble in water, so this example is inside your cells. Vitamin E is going to protect the environments that are made of fats. The cell membranes, and you’ve got lots and lots of cells in your body, are made of fats. Vitamin E is going to protect for free radicals in there. Foods that have vitamin E are delicious and easy to incorporate. Sunflower seeds, almonds, avocado, spinach, and collard greens are just to name a few.

Now, the fifth food group is citrus fruit. This is not for the vitamin C, although they have good vitamin C content in them, but because of a compound called limonene which is going to help trigger the enzymes needed for phase one. Now, another interesting thing is that the zest or the rind is going to have a lot of limonene so wash those lemons really well, then break the skin and add it to marinades, to your chicken or fish or maybe add it to salad dressings.

The last food group for today’s video is going to be protein foods. This is very important because the body needs amino acids which come from protein to go through the second phase in the detoxification. Without those amino acids, the liver gets stuck so we don’t want those intermediate compounds to be stuck and not flushed away outside of the body. We want the liver to be able to do its job, we don’t want it to slow down. Good sources of protein, I’m going to start with eggs. That’s because they also contain sulfur which is going to be important to build the specific amino acids that we need. It also contains choline which is important for cell structure.

Choose pastured eggs when possible. Now, also chicken so pastured or free range chicken, and organic turkey and grass fed beef is also going to provide amino acids as well as B vitamins. Nuts and seeds are going to provide vitamin E along the proteins. Fish is a great example of protein source so choose small fish like sardines and anchovies–are going to have omega 3s. Wild caught salmon and small fish, even white fish. Again, low mercury is going to help with the detoxification. Also, beans and lentils are going to have other B vitamins and amino acids.

These were the first six foods to help your body detox.

  • The cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts
  • Garlic and onion
  • Vitamin C foods like orange, pineapple, bell peppers, broccoli
  • Vitamin E foods like avocado, sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach
  • Citrus fruit
  • High quality protein foods
