Success Story: Losing Weight, Fighting Diabetes, and Establishing a Lifestyle that you Love and Enjoy

Listen to Tad’s success story with losing weight, fighting diabetes, changing his diet and mindset, and adopting a healthy lifestyle.

My wish for you is to be inspired to take a step to care for your own health. To do what is needed to lose weight, reverse a chronic disease, and have a body that you love and feel great.

Diabetes can be managed with diet and lifestyle and no medications. You’re not destined to have it just because your parent did. Genetics are only 50% of the picture if not less.

Tad’s results didn’t happen overnight. It took 4-6 months, some trial and error, and step-by-step changes.

He reached out for help. He stopped wasting time trying to figure it out on his own. He was committed to himself and his health. He was willing to learn and be coached. He took actions consistently (even when they were not perfect). He showed up and followed up even when life didn’t go as he anticipated. He was willing to deal with the discomfort of something new and different to get the health results he wanted.

Here are some highlights of the call

Tad sharing his results and transformations, and what it took for change to sink in:

You’ve really helped me make some tremendous changes in my diet, which was difficult, but now it doesn’t feel difficult. You know there was a stage where I felt like I was losing things that I really cared about. I loved to eat, loved going out to nice restaurants and now I don’t feel like that’s a problem at all. I’ve just learned how to eat differently. I’m really excited about it. My numbers have gone from a high of 6.7 on the A1C down to 5.8 and I want to get them below 5.7 so I can beat diabetes, period.

I’ve lost a little over 20 pounds. I want to lose another 5-7 more. I’ve dramatically changed my diet and changed my alcohol consumption and now I’m getting much better about exercising 5 days a week. I feel good.

I get a lot of compliments from people that know me saying, “what are you doing, you look terrific. How much weight have you lost? Are you feeling good? What’s going on?” It becomes kind of self-perpetuating. It’s a positive, virtuous cycle that reinforces itself.

Tad had diabetes for 2 years before working together. When I asked him why it took 2 years to reach out for help, that’s what he said:

What I originally started doing was exercising like crazy. So, I did a P90X regimen, 6 times a week, very intense, and I did that for about 3-4 months without focusing on diet as much. I tried to do my own diet, but I didn’t really know what I was doing, well I thought I did, but I didn’t. What happened from that was that my numbers didn’t improve that much and I injured my knees and had to go through some rehab to get some functionality back into my knees. I got really discouraged at this point and didn’t do anything for a few months. Then I realized that I needed to do something and that’s when I reached out to a friend of the family and found you. Now I’m really focusing on my diet and exercise.

Tad talks about his experience working with his doctor vs. working with a nutritionist to overcome a chronic disease like diabetes…

I really do like my regular doctor a lot, but when it comes to nutrition, that’s not where his focus is, it’s not his specialty. So, I really felt like I needed somebody who really knew their stuff and was up on the latest research related to diabetes to guide me specifically with diet and supplements and all that kind of stuff. It’s made an honest difference, I’m ecstatic.

You’ve helped me with a lot of things that I would’ve never imagined. For me, diet is a complicated area and even when you think you know what you’re doing, my experience for me is I thought I knew, but I really didn’t know. I thought I was eating in a healthy way and now I look at what I’m doing and I’m eating very differently.

One of the things that I think you do that I really appreciate is that you kind of break things down and help with a plan. “Well so this isn’t working, well what would make it work, what would help make it easier for you.” This last session we had, we were traveling, we had four graduations in the family plus business traveling going on, so my exercise was lousy. I kind of came in thinking, I don’t have good stuff to report, but you were good at breaking it down. I felt like that made a huge difference and since our session, I just finished doing 5 workouts as we had planned in the last week and it felt great and good about making the progress. I think that troubleshooting and that planning from a dietary perspective and even the other lifestyle issues are a great help.

On a separate note, Tad mentioned his daughter who followed the food sensitivity test and plan

The other thing I’d like to say that’s different from my situation, but has to do with my daughter. My daughter has lower GI issues for many years and we took her to doctors and has had sonograms and all that stuff. No one could ever figure out what was going on. They told her that it’s in her head or that she was imagining it. She would have reactions to eating and we didn’t really know what was going on. She went to see you and within 2 visits, you had figured out what was going on with her because of her intolerance to different foods. You did a full panel on her to her reactions to different foods and it’s made an enormous difference for her. It’s just funny that there’s so much that modern medicine—modern medicine is wonderful, my wife had breast cancer and they did a fabulous job fighting the breast cancer, but in these other areas, you really need to look for somebody with a different skillset. I think that your background as a nutritionist is a phenomenal complement to working with a regular western medicine doctor because they are only going to see certain pieces where that’s their strong suit. You’re bringing a whole different skillset and knowledge set and it makes a huge difference.
